Cottage Street and single-building historic districts
Wellesley's Historic District Commission reviews exterior alterations for the 65 properties in the Cottage Street Historic District and five Single Building Historic Districts. A certificate is needed before work on those exteriors begins.
How bathroom remodeling goes in Wellesley.
Wellesley's demolition bylaw lists interior changes, and non-structural roofing and siding, among the work it does not review. A primary bath gut renovation in a 1930s colonial is a building-permit job, not a hearing.
If the new bath needs a window enlarged or moved on a house in the Cottage Street district or one of the single-building districts, that one exterior change goes to the Historic District Commission.

Do I need any town approval beyond a permit for a Wellesley bathroom?
Usually not. Building and plumbing permits cover most bath remodels; only exterior changes on a property in a local historic district need Historic District Commission review.
