Kitchen remodeling

Kitchens, from the first sketch to the last cabinet pull.

Around Waltham, a lot of kitchens sit in houses built before 1960. Opening a wall in an older house can turn up wiring, plumbing or framing that needs updating, so we look for that at the first visit and put it in the estimate instead of finding it halfway through.

You make the choices that matter to you: layout, cabinets, counters, hardware and lighting. We handle the order of work, the trades and the inspections, and keep you posted on what's next.

Planning a kitchen?

Things to decide early.

  1. 1

    Layout first

Decide whether the sink, range and refrigerator stay where they are. Keeping plumbing and gas lines in place saves time and money; moving them is possible, just more work.

  2. 2

    Appliances before cabinets

Appliance sizes set cabinet widths. Pick the range, refrigerator and dishwasher before the cabinet order goes in.

  3. 3

    Cabinets set the budget

Cabinets are usually the biggest line item in a kitchen. Choose the style and construction before you fall for a countertop.

  4. 4

    Counters come after

Stone counters are measured after the cabinets are installed, so there's a short gap between cabinets going in and counters arriving.

  5. 5

    Light in layers

Plan ceiling lights, under-cabinet lights and pendants together. It's far easier while the walls and ceiling are open.

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Waltham?

It depends on the size of the room, whether walls, plumbing or windows move, and the cabinets and counters you choose. After a free visit we send a written, line-item estimate, so you can see where the money goes and adjust before anything starts.

Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen?

Usually, yes, once the work goes beyond paint and cosmetic changes: moving plumbing, new wiring or changing walls. We file the building permit with your town and schedule the inspections. Plumbing and electrical permits are pulled by the licensed plumber and electrician on the job, as Massachusetts requires.

Can we keep using the kitchen during the remodel?

For a full remodel, plan on being without a working kitchen for part of the job. We'll tell you at the estimate how long it will be out of service, so you can plan a temporary setup.

Do you design the kitchen, or do I need a designer?

Kitchen design is part of what we do: layout, cabinets, counters and finishes, worked out with you before anything is ordered. If you already have a designer or architect, we're glad to build from their plans.
