Watertown rules that apply
What Watertown requires for iron work.
Mount Auburn Street Historic District
Inside the Mount Auburn Street Historic District, the Historic District Commission reviews exterior architectural features visible from a public way and can prevent demolitions and inappropriate alterations.
Street opening permit and winter ban
Excavation for new laterals or utilities, driveway paving, and storing dumpsters or materials in the public right-of-way all need a street opening permit filed by the contractor. Watertown bars street openings from November 15 to April 15 unless the Superintendent of Public Works allows an exception.

How iron work goes in Watertown.
In the Mount Auburn Street Historic District, a new railing or gate visible from the street goes to the Historic District Commission before it is installed. We bring drawings showing the pattern and finish so the review has what it needs.
Many Watertown two-families share a front stair or porch, so a railing job often means agreeing a design with both owners. If the work blocks the sidewalk with materials, Watertown requires a street opening permit for that use of the right-of-way.
“I am so glad I chose HouseCraft. I found everyone to be knowledgeable, reliable, innovative and hardworking. There were things you did that others said were impossible to do, like raise the ceiling pipes in my basement. Your prices are very reasonable and working with all of you was such a pleasure. The bathroom and kitchen are fantastic! I liked their work so much I had them renovate another bathroom and it is beautiful.”
Rita B. · Watertown, MA “The guys were quick and professional. Reasonable price. I love the way everything looks. Thank you HouseCraft.”
