Iron work in Arlington, MA

In Arlington's historic districts, an iron fence in front of the house needs a certificate and must stay open, while existing iron fences must be kept.

The Arlington Historic District Commissions' guidelines are unusually direct about metal. Iron fences and original ornate wooden fences are to be maintained, and any fence forward of the front facade, on both street sides of a corner lot, needs a certificate of appropriateness. Backyard fences aren't reviewed.

For a new front fence the commissions want an open design that doesn't hide the house, and they list wrought iron and picket fences among those they may allow case by case, built to suit the house's period. Porch and stair railings fall under the same review when visible, and the guidelines bar exposed composite, PVC or vinyl on steps and porches, which suits iron. Outside the districts, the building code governs rails and guards.

Arlington rules that apply

What Arlington requires for iron work.

  1. 1

    Seven local historic districts

Avon Place, Broadway, Central Street, Jason/Gray, Mount Gilboa/Crescent Hill, Pleasant Street and Russell are local historic districts, covering over 300 properties. Most exterior changes visible from the street need a commission certificate, and the building department can't issue a permit for exterior work or demolition without it.

    Front fences in historic districts

In the local districts, any fence forward of the front facade needs a certificate of appropriateness, and corner lots have two fronts. Front fences should be open in character, and wrought iron is one of the examples the guidelines say may be allowed case by case.
