Wayland rules that apply

What Wayland requires for iron work.

  • Chapter 194 vegetated buffer

Under Wayland's local wetlands regulations, additions and existing homes keep or restore a 15-foot unmowed buffer next to wetlands. New construction needs a buffer of at least 30 feet with permanent markers such as boulders or a fence at the edge of lawn.

  • Historic district review

In the Wayland Center and Bow Road historic districts, the Historic District Commission reviews exterior changes visible from a public way. That covers alterations, additions, demolition and new construction, plus stone walls, fences, driveways and walkways.

How iron work goes in Wayland.

The Commission's design guidelines discourage vinyl, chain link and light-gauge metal fencing in the districts and lean toward low, open fences along the street. A well-proportioned wrought iron fence or railing fits that guidance better than most alternatives.

Outside the districts, the issue is usually wetlands. Setting fence posts inside Wayland's 15-foot vegetated buffer, or in the 100-foot buffer zone, is work the Conservation Commission reviews, so we check the property before quoting a fence line.
