Kitchen remodeling in Weston, MA
A Weston kitchen remodel needs a Board of Health renovation permit as well as a building permit, because every house here runs on a private septic system.

Board of Health permit and septic sign-off
Renovations, additions, new construction, demolition, dumpsters and portable toilets each need their own Board of Health permit in Weston. Projects that add habitable space must include a Title 5 inspection report less than three years old, plus existing and proposed floor plans from basement through attic.

Pre-1945 demolition delay
A demolition permit for any building, or part of one, that existed by January 1, 1945 goes to the Historical Commission first. If the Commission finds the building preferably preserved after a hearing, no demolition permit issues for 12 months.

How kitchen remodeling goes in Weston.
The health permit is mostly paperwork for a kitchen that stays inside its walls: an application, the assessor's building card and floor plans. We put those together with the construction drawings so both reviews start the same week.
If the plan moves an exterior wall or adds windows on a house that stood by 1945, the work can count as partial demolition under Weston's bylaw. We check the age and the inventory listing before we draw a bump-out, not after.
