Iron work in Winchester, MA
Winchester needs no permit for most iron fences under 7 feet, but in Rangeley Park any fence along a road or lot line is presumed inappropriate.
Winchester's Building Department keeps out of fence placement except for pool enclosures and corner lots, and a fence needs a permit only when it's taller than 7 feet. That leaves iron fences, gates and railings mostly to the property line, the neighbors and the building code for guards and stair rails.
Rangeley is the exception. Its heritage handbook presumes that any fence or wall along a road, in a prominent yard or on a lot line clashes with the district's open lawns, so a front gate there is a hard sell. Railings on original stairs should be repaired in kind where possible. For window guards and interior stair rails, the state building code sets the rules everywhere in town.

Do I need a permit for an iron fence in Winchester?
Not unless it's over 7 feet, or it's pool fencing or on a corner lot. In Rangeley Park, though, a front or boundary fence needs the heritage commission's certificate and is presumed inappropriate.
